Reverse osmosis . It is the opposite process to the natural phenomenon called osmosis.

In reverse osmosis, water moves from the highest concentration solution to the lowest through a semi-permeable membrane using pressure . It is a method used to purify water by passing through a number of stages, after which the water is separated from other salts and minerals.

The principle of operation of reverse osmosis

The state of osmotic equilibrium (above), the state of reverse osmotic pressure (below) p1> p2.

The liquid whose salinity is to be reduced is located on one side of a semi-permeable membrane and on the other side the solution whose concentration is to be increased. The latter is subjected to pressure so that this pressure is higher than the osmotic pressure of salt water. In this way, the liquid molecules can move against the direction of their “normal” osmotic movement, and the pressure causes them to move on the other side of the membrane where the salt-free water collects.
